swap only gets used when you run out of RAM; as long as you don't, it remains at 0.

If you install several Linux versions, is it possible to use the same swap partition?
Now I am running open SUSE 10.2. I hope to install Fedora7 and Ubuntu.

My current hard drive has no space. I will buy a new hard drive to install Ubuntu and Fedora.
I think I need another swap partition on the new hard drive. Because Ubuntu and Fedora7 will be on the new drive.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
linux-3vxw:~ # fdisk -l

Disk /dev/hda: 200.0 GB, 200049647616 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24321 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

/dev/hda1 * 1 5874 47182873+ 7 HPFS/NTFS

/dev/hda2 5875 24321 148175527+ 5 Extended

/dev/hda5 5875 9138 26218048+ 83 Linux

/dev/hda6 9139 12402 26218048+ 83 Linux

/dev/hda7 12403 12794 3148708+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris

/dev/hda8 12795 23891 89136621 83 Linux

linux-3vxw:~ #
---------------------------

My swap partition is hda7. I believe I have to create another swap partition on the new drive.
Your comments are welcome.

You can use the same swap so long as you don't use it for persistent data across restarts.
Generally this means do not use suspend/resume on any of the systems.

Edit: yes,the swap can be on a different disk to the rest of the system partitions.

Thanks syg00 for the comments.

What about Solaris? If I install Solaris, will it recognize the swap partition?

I doubt it.
Last I looked at it Solaris used slices - I didn't try, but I doubt Linux will look at them.
If jlliagre doesn't pass by here, ask on the Solaris forum.
