Folder actions for Linux/Unix

Hello LQ.org,

I was wondering if there is a way to trigger scripts when every something changes in a folder/directory. This is more or less like the Folder actions in Mac OS X. So please let me know if you happen to know any ways of triggering folder actions in Linux/Unix.

Regards,
digerati.
