fixing distortion cause by bad dpi calculation

At work, I have a linux machine and PC with similar LCD monitors. So I brought in some extra cables and now I have a working dual head setup (nvidia + RH Fedora). however I have one problem - certain applications are stretched wide due to a bad dpi calculation. When I issue the command xdpyinfo, the pertinent output is:
screen #0:
dimensions: 2560x1024 pixels (380x313 millimeters)
resolution: 171x83 dots per inch

obviously the dimension pixels are correct, but the size is wrong causing the dpi to be wrong and causing a stretched look for any application that uses that dpi for sizing.

For an example check out this page under the heading "Dual Monitor and Wide Screen Pitfalls"
http://yolinux.com/TUTORIALS/LinuxAndDualMonitors.html

Now if this was my home machine I think I could easily fix it by setting the /etc/X11/XF86Config "DisplaySize" (as suggested on the above page) or I could just pass a dpi argument when starting X. Unfortuneately at work, I cannot do either of those things.

Is there anything I can do as a lowly user to my configuration to fix this issue?

Thanks
