You may also want to check that ipchains and ip6tables are off as well:

chkconfig --levels 345 iptables off
chkconfig --levels 345 ipchains off
chkconfig --levels 345 ip6tables off

/etc/init.d/iptables stop
/etc/init.d/ipchains off
/etc/init.d/ip6tables off

/etc/services would be a good place to look, too :)

Cheers,

Since you are using RedHat 8.0 you may want to check the /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files to see if you are restriciting access by IP addresses.

when i ping i get this:

[Bane@localhost Bane]$ ping 192.168.1.107
PING 192.168.1.107 (192.168.1.107) from 192.168.1.100 : 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.100 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable

i will look at the host deny and host allow.

Are you sure the destination host does _not_ have a firewall that prevents it from replying to icmp-echo-requests ( pings ) among other things? If this is a windows box, zonealarm of sorts?
