Faking joystick

Hi,
I'm trying to fake either a whole new joystick device, or fake button presses from an existing joystick. I want epsxe under wine to be able to read it. I've tried a fifo named /dev/input/js1 and cat'ing /dev/input/js0 (which I chmod'ed so that wine could not read it) to it, but only axis values get passed (I assume it is because wine could not use ioctl on the fifo and so was not able to determine button count).

I guess that if I could simulate the ioctl calls I'd be in the clear, but have no clue on how to do that.

Any ideas?

Thanks
