extreme slowdown in logging in, sending mail

Greetings.

I have a mail server that's been running just fine for a few months now. All of a sudden, though receiving mail is very fast, it takes about 20 seconds to send a small text email. (Actually, it's more of a 20-second delay. Once it starts to send, it does so very quickly, no matter the size of the file.)

I've also noticed (though I'm not sure if this is relevent) that when I ssh to the box and type in my username, it's about 20 seconds before I'm prompted for the password. Once I'm running, everything works fine, and there's nothing unusual about "top" that would indicate any odd processes.

I'm totally baffled. Can anyone help?

Thanks!

kenn

Thanks.

Help a (relative) newbie out ... What should I check for? I'm not running any DNS services on this box (or on this network, for that matter) ... When I set up the box, I listed a real-world DNS server. That's been working fine until just a day or two ago.

Once again, thanks for the suggestion. And thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction again.
