explain the SCRIPTs

Hi,
This is just a general question.

Suddenly i got this doubt. In my server, the crontab has a lot of scripts like this one.

30 * * * * /xxx/yyy/example.sh >> /tmp/directory/something.log 2>&1

i understand crond somewhat.
Here every 30 minutes the crond is assigned to run the script, to append the log file.Is it?

My main clueless is
"" 2>&1""

What is this mean? I saw this in lot of crontab files.
Please Explain me as brief as you can.

Thanks in Advance.
