Exluding modules without recompiling?

Is there any way to exclude modules without having to recompile the kernel?

do you mean keeping them from loading? You can control this in /etc/modules.conf if I remember correctly. On slackware it is /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.

you don't modprobe nvidia you have to load the driver via /etc/X11/xorg.conf

When I installed, or tried to install the nvidia drivers, I got a message saying that the Rivafb module needs unloaded before I can use the Nvidia drivers. Do I just need to change xorg.conf or do I also need to do something with the kernel modules? Thanks.

try rmmod rivafb if you do lsmod you will see all the modules loaded. A frame buffer module is usually loaded at startup

If I do that and have not a module to take its place, will I lose my video or will it default to vesa?

yes you won't have any problem doing this. It should fall back to vesa. if you rmmod that module. Just reconfigure your xorg.conf and then startx after you do that if you get errors then post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
