I have 2 linux machine and need to exchange data through serial port.

How do I do that?

and is a null modem line exactly the same as normal serial port line?

Null modem is a special cross over cable used to connect 2 computers or a computer and a terminal without modem. The transmit pin of one side is connected to the receive pin of the other and vice-versa. You may google "null modem" to get a schematic.
All you have to to is to connect the computers with this cable and establish ppp in both computers. You will have a lan with this configuration.
