establish my Linux to public

Hi all,

I am not Linux admin, neither Linux guru and I have a question. I am not sure if it's possible though. I have Linux server and I have cable connection at home. what I am trying to do is to set up some kind of Point and Point VPN (or any other method if it's easier) so I can access to my server at home from work so I can do testing.

Please let me know if it's possible and detail of what I need to do.

thanks Million.

Are you behind a router that has NAT? (like a linksys or something of that nature?) If you are that gonna be your first challenge to over come (google port-forwarding or setting up a DMZ)

If the modem is connected directly to your box then I'd say SSH should fill the roll you want. I'm not sure how to set SSH up (though I'll probably start learning soon) so you'd have to find a tutorial out on the net (http://www.suso.org/docs/shell/ssh.sdf)

You need to explain what kind of 'access' you want. You say 'Linux server', but you haven't said what it is serving. If it is an http server (web browser access), ssh server (ssh login access), ftp server (bad news, that), smb server (Windows-like shares), you may already have access. Your ISP may block some or all of the traditional ports used for those services, and you may have a firewall that blocks those, also.

Please give more information as to what kind of access you want, and some details of what distro you are running, as well as the nature of the local network in your home, if any.

thanks for the input,

I had never done this before so those are of the question I will miss so sorry.

any way, I need to get full access to this server, I guess I owuld need ssh to log in.

this will be a brand new set up and I am trying to set this up. I am an Oracle DBA so not much on Linux admin. All I want to do is to get to my server via ssh so I can test just like I am at home.

You will need to have an ssh server running, then. When you say 'this will be a brand new set up', I take it that you have not yet installed linux. Most complete distributions will have an ssh server installed by default. Do your installation, and if you can't access it with a secure shell client, come back and ask more specific questions, here.

thanks,

By default ssh is installed during the Linux installation. b/c I accesss to the Linux server via ssh at work but it's within the LAN.

I guess my problem and my question is "how can I access my server via WAN?" and could you please give me the full setup guideline for settting WAN set up?

thanks so much

NAT-Traversal is part of openswan. No need to do such configuring (it's sometimes not practical). If you're doing ssh, however, port forwarding should be used.

You haven't reported anything about the nature of your local LAN and how it attaches to the WAN, as I requested earlier, nor anything about the Linux server you are trying to attach to. Without this information, there is too little to go on.

What have you actually tried, that makes you think it doesn't already work?
