Embarrassing KDE question

This is pretty embarrassing, I'm sure I must be missing something very simple. My problem is that in KDE 3.1 my desktop icons wont stay where they're supposed to. Every time I log in I arrange them just how I like them, then when I log in next time they are all over the place again. It's starting to get irritating. Can someone please tell me how to make them stay put?

Thanks

Make sure you are the owner of the .kde directory tree and all the files especially in .kde/share/config, and make sure the directories/files are writable.
