eDonkey & ed2k_gui, permission denied

Hello

I've installed eDonkey (donkey.0.50.1) and the gui "ed2k_gui"

When I run the gui, and attempt to spawn the core, I get the error:

Code:
GUI: spawning core failed: Failed to execute child process "/home/toby/apps/eDonkey/donkey0.50.1" (Permission denied)
I'm pretty sure all I need to do is chmod the donkey0.50.1 executable, but after being hacked once I'm so paranoid about security now that I don't want to do it wrong.

What chmod command should I use on donkey0.50.1? Any advice appreciated.

ls -ld ./donkey0.50.1
returns:
-rwxrwxr-x 1 toby toby 1626060 Aug 14 15:03

and
ls -ld ./
when in the folder returns:
drwxrwxr-x 3 toby toby 4096 Aug 24 14:51

Does that seem correct?

It's correct when you can execute it. Just make it 777 That's much easier.

Well, I typed "chmod 777 donkey0.50.1", and now "ls -ld donkey0.50.1" returns:

-rwxrwxrwx 1 toby toby 1626060 Aug 14 15:03 donkey0.50.1*

Yet I stil get the error:
GUI: GUI: spawning core failed: Failed to execute child process "/home/toby/apps/eDonkey/donkey0.50.1" (Permission denied)

when I try to spawn the core in the edonkey (ed2k_gui)

How can that be when it is chmoded 777? What should I try now? I'm stuck :-?

just to follow up with success:
I chmodded a directory above the donkey executable to allow me to execute it.
