DVD will not mount after changing Motherboard

I have recently had to replace the motherboard on my PC due to a power surge.

I re-installed SUSE 8.2 (from the DVD drive) but once I am in Linux I can't mount it!

The DVD is showing up in the Boot process as /dev/hdc (secondary master):
HL-ST-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM

fstab has an entry for: /dev/dvd /mount/dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
and /dev/dvd is symbolically linked to /dev/hdc.

Interestingly my cdrecorder works just fine, using /dev/hdd

Grub boot option is set for:
hdd=ide-scsi hddlun=0 (to enable scsi emulation)

But when I try a similar entry for hdc I still get no joy!

As you would expect:
YES, I have a cd in the drive.

Please help, this is really frustrating!

mount: /dev/dvd is not a valid block device

ls -l /dev/dvd gives:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Aug 5 22:31 /dev/dvd -> hdc

ls -l /dev/hdc gives:

brw------- 1 dandrews disk 22, 0 Mar 14 2003 /dev/hdc
