Dual Boot Questions

Hi all. I've looked at the myriad of threads out there and none directly address this specific problem in as many angles of attack that I'm wanting. I have Mandrake 10 Official installed on my machine (it was running as a single HD setup for a long time) and I'm wanting to dual boot using LILO to boot my Win2k installation on a seperate disk (now /dev/hdb). I've been trying to get LILO to boot Win2k, but everytime I select it in the LILO menu, the screen goes black and gives me a blinking cursor into infinity until I finally reboot. I had to install Windoze with the HD in the primary position (as is required by windoze).

I've tried using NTLDR to load MDK but when I do it gives me a kernel panic error, stops, and I have no choice but to reboot.

I've tried swapping the IDE positions. I think the reason I'm getting the kernel panic is because fstab and/or lilo.conf still references /hda when it is actually in the /hdb position. I think the reason NTLDR won't boot is because it is in the /hdb position on all attempts. I'm trying to figure out a course of action, because I do not want to screw up anything. Right now as it stands, MDK10 and Win2k will boot seperately when each is in the IDE0 (/hda) position.

My Questions are:

1. Is there a way to get Lilo to boot Win2k without reinstalling my Linux distro?

2. Would "dd if=/dev/hdb of=bootsect.win bs=512 count=1" work if Lilo was on the MBR on /dev/hda and I set Lilo to reference the resulting image obtained from the windoze bootsector on /dev/hdb?

3. Does the windoze HD and NTLDR absolutely have to be in the IDE0(/hda) position?

4. Am I correct in thinking that I will stop the kernel panic if I change all of the /hdaX references to /hdbX in either fstab and/or lilo.conf if MDK is in the IDE1(/hdb) position?

Thanx in advance.

Alex

just edit /etc/lilo.conf and for the kernel(s) it should find a line like:

boot = /dev/hda

change it to

boot = /dev/hdb

then save it, and type

lilo

then reboot and see what happens

Your suggestion sounds great, only, under what setup? With LILO as the bootstrap or NTLDR? Thanx for the quick reply.
