Distro speeds!

I was wondering if anyone know this:
seems that simplymempis 3.3 runs faster than FC3 on the same machine. why?

is there a big difference with distro speeds? How to speed up FC3?

"How to speed up FC3?"

Here is an explanation of how to speed up a Linux system. The explanation is applicable to any distribution.

Where did you obtain this data?

This can be due to many different factors. One reason may be that Fedora Core runs more daemons and is generally bulkier by default. This can be easily changed. It could also depend on the graphical user interface you're using. Some interfaces run more services by default and are slower.

First, upgrade to Fedora Core 4. The easiest thing to do is run only a window manager rather than a full desktop environment. Fedora Core 4 uses Gnome by default, which is slow compared to running just a window manager.

i don't know what mepis is i assume Debian

the speed diference between fedora core and Debian is like night and day
the factors that go into to making fedora so terribly unusably slow are many
check out the difference in size of the /etc directory for fedora core 1 and my LFS system

Fedora core1:
drwxr-xr-x 23 root root 118784 2005-07-13 15:34 dev

LFS6:
drwxr-xr-x 31 root root 2888 2005-08-12 17:49 etc

the /etc for fedora is 41 times larger than my lfs and my lfs has all the bells and whistles and is fast as lightning

i couldn't figure out how to build such a bloated system if my life depended on it

Is upgrading to FC4 really that much faster? how much of a speed increase from FC3? Also, how's FC4's stability?

I realize that the speed might be relative (less stuff to load at start up... also a possibly smaller /etc, maybe even the diff between ext3 and reiserfs).

Are there any comparisons of performance between distros? I can check startup times, time to start open office, etc. myself, but perhaps there is a more accurate way to know which runs smoothest?

Law of Benchmarking #1: No one test can properly gauge a system.
Law of Benchmarking #2: The importance of a test can never be determined with certainty.
Interpretation: You need more than one test to figure out the general speed of the system, however, the tests can not be combined with accuracy.
Of course, Bogomips do not apply here.
