Deleting tar files


hi,

I have some files on my system that I installed by tar. I had to complie these files may self.

Now I want to delete few for these files, some of the file are located in /usr/bin.

I would I delete these files.

You mean you want to uninstall the programs you've compiled yourself? The first thing to do would check out the README files or other documentation that came with your software and see if there's any instructions on how to uninstall them. If there isn't, you could try these:

If you still have the Makefiles left (which you SHOULD have), you could cd to the directory where you kept the source code before compiling the programs, become root with the su command, and type

make uninstall

If this works, you'll get rid of the files you installed. However, this doesn't always work. Then, I guess, you'll have to manually delete the files you installed - ie become root and rm the files.

You might want to consider something like make_uninstall (look on Freshmeat for it) for future.
