Right, my query was simply why does the Kali system use more than the others. Obviously Kali does much more than day to day tasks for it not to run on an old Pentium 4 system with 512mb of RAM or may be 1GB in total available for it.

I imagine when i get the preowned system I'll use the ubuntu system, that will have onboard wifi network connectivity I guess too.

Kali(\Debian for one thing only) has light down to a netinst as well or just install Debian and whatever tools(\looks) you want to play with at your own risk.

I'm not using Kali, I have used it on a storage disk for internal home hack tries.

I'm just puzzled as to why that wouldn't install on the Pentium 4, yet the lite 3 did and works fine on that.

But yes I will use a system close enough to XP for a new preowned system I can use day to day as a try out of a linux. I keep repeating myself, sorry.

Back on topic: have you checked out Distrowatch? I don't often like "reviews" but use them, (Many a seA so seaRch WiSely.) looking for both highest number of people and giving the most stars or whatever...

Depends how the kernel was built, most old computers need a 486 or 586 build, slightly newer would use a 686 built, these are necessary because of the processors used.

I still think you should use AntiX on it.

Antix, and is that similar to 7 or XP?
