Customizing XEmacs

Hello to all,

I really find it disgusting to use gedit for programming rather than XEmacs.

Will someone help me to customize the font, syntax highlighting, text size of XEmacs, ___by modifying "custom.el"___

Of course I did follow following thread, but it didn't prove to be of much help !
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...t-type-489000/

Here's the default /home/anisha/.xemacs/custom.el
Code:
(custom-set-variables
 '(font-lock-mode t nil (font-lock)))
(custom-set-faces
 '(default ((t (:size "16pt" :family "Fixed"))) t))

I studied that link and modified the settings through the menus and saved them. These settings got saved in custom.el file and I could see them there.

Now when I re-started XEmacs, the default settings were back, not the ones which I had set!!

It means XEmacs doesn't read custom.el on start up.

How should I make it read the custom.el file by default ??

Help..
