Could smbmount be back in all distros?

Hello

It was really simple to mount a samba share in the past. Depreciated is smbmount and you won't find it anywhere.

Example :
Code:
#smbmount //192.168.0.1/share1 /mnt –o username=steev,workgroup=test
Could we make it again avaiable, maybe different using CIFS or whatever (mount.cifs) on all platforms?

smbmount was efficient, simple and could be of interests for easy use of Linux.

mount.cifs is just as easy, and has the same syntax.

you mean like this ?

Code:
mount.cifs //192.168.0.1/share1 /mnt –o username=steev,workgroup=test
Is the driver (i.e. compiled *.ko file) which is required by the kernel the same?

My understanding is that when cifs was included in linux kernel, the need for a stand-alone smbmount utility (part of samba) became kind of redundant. https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/LinuxCIFS

Removing smbmount in RedHat is pretty ancient history: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=181638

smbfs versus cifs. I am not so sure that CIFS is a wise choice.
