compiling question

If I compile a specific library and then need to update that library by compiling from source, when I compile will it replace the old version or will I need to cd to the directory is in and make uninstall?

If the major version stays (libsomething.1) the same then on install the link from the new lib (libsomething.1.2.3) should point to it. Especially if this recompiling was done for security reasons it makes sense to restart any applications that rely on it RSN and remove the old one.
