Hi all,
I'm facing a very irritating issue right now. It seems like my dedicated hosting provider didn't check the netfilter/iptables option when they compiled the 2.6.10 kernel. As soon as I type iptables -L it gives me an error message saying
FATAL: Module ip_tables not found.
iptables v1.3.1: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
I couldn't find the module anywhere, lsmod, modprobe all that didn't help at all. Strangely enough, when I examined the old .config in the kernel source directory, I saw the netfilter/iptables option flagged with an M, indicating iptables should be loadable as a module. But I couldn't find it anywhere, /lib/modules/*. No where can the modules be found. So irritating. What could have possible gone wrong here?
I'm thinking about recompiling the kernel remotely, but is it possible to get the new kernel UP AND RUNNING with my one shot attempt? My hosting provider charges 75usd per half an hour for support which I don't want to go with that option at all.
Do you guys think it's possible for me to recompile the kernel based on the old .config file, have the netfilter/iptables built-in directly into the kernel instead as a module, and get the machine reboot without any problem? I just wonder if anyone of you here has compile the kernel remotely without any pain?
Btw, the machine is on Debian.
I appreciate all your help guys.
Sodown.
