Colouring things in Linux/Shell

Just a thing, I have been using some other Distributions like Arch and Mandrake which make use of colour in their scripts (eg. startup scripts).

After looking at these scripts I have found random symbols and numbers which manage to acheive colour?

This is also the case in ~/.bash_profile.

How does this work? How do they do it?

Thanks

Here is a link that will help. It describes how to change your prompt and to colour.
