Cloning a DVD

Hi,

I have two DVD drives on my computer (the first being a DVD reader - hdc- and the second a DVD+RW - hdd -), and I would like to copy the contents of a DVD in the first to a blank DVD+R in the second.

I have looked into dvd::rip, but that keeps on presenting random errors (the last one being one which I don't understand), and I was giong to try ogmrip - but it isn't in the Ubuntu repos, and it has tons of dependencies.

So, I was wondering if I could use a few CLI apps and, with the right parameters, copy the contents of a DVD onto another? Could I do something like make an iso of the first DVD (using mkisofs?) and then burn it onto the DVD+R (using cdrecord?)?

Thanks in advance,

-jk

Sorry for double posting-

I have managed to get dvd::rip to work, but I just need to change one final setting in order to burn the iso to the DVD. I have looked at the man page for cdrecord, but I am still not sure what the "cdrecord device" is. Here's an excerpt from the man page:

Quote:
The device refers to scsibus/target/lun of the CD/DVD-Recorder. Commu‐
nication on SunOS is done with the SCSI general driver scg. Other
operating systems are using a library simulation of this driver. Pos‐
sible syntax is: dev= scsibus, target, lun or dev= target, lun. In the
latter case, the CD/DVD-Recorder has to be connected to the default
SCSI bus of the machine. Scsibus, target and lun are integer numbers.
Some operating systems or SCSI transport implementations may require to
specify a filename in addition. In this case the correct syntax for
the device is: dev= devicename:scsibus,target,lun or dev= device‐
name:target, lun. If the name of the device node that has been speci‐
fied on such a system refers to exactly one SCSI device, a shorthand in
the form dev= devicename:@ or dev= devicename:@,lun may be used instead
of dev= devicename:scsibus,target,lun.
Any ideas? I'm not sure what I need to put as the device...

what distro are you using? try either dmesg|grep 'your dvd brand', or less /etc/fstab|grep hdd . on my debian etch system, my dvd is /mnt/cdrom3, the device is /dev/sr0, which is in turn a symlink to /scsi/something. i've used xdvdshrink with some success. and post your errors.

Hi, and thanks for replying. The following line is from my fstab:
Code:
/dev/hdd /media/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
How do I discover what the symlink to /dev/hdd is though? And once I have discovered it, how do I use that information to set the correct device...

Thanks,

-jk

some dvd backup programs

Some programs to consider (for making backup copies of your own DVDs) are:

k9copy: http://k9copy.free.fr/

lxdvdrip:
