I run a RH9 text-only server, and with 233Mhz and 32MB RAM, it's always a good idea to run only what you need to make the server work. When RH9 starts, I see it loading PCMCIA, mail services, and all this stuff that I could be better without. How can I stop these services from running? I ran setup and configured it from there, but it doesn't list even 1/2 of the things that's loading.
Method 1:
Log in remotely using ssh, run 'redhat-config-services'.
Method 2:
Look in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/
There should be several links to scripts that will run in runlevel 3 (console only mode).
The services that start with S## will be started and the ones that start with K## will be stopped. So, in order to stop PCMCIA from being loaded, for example, rename S24pcmcia to K24pcmcia.
Hey there's some stuff like USB that's loading before runlevel 3 hits, how do I disable stuff previous to runlevel 3? I don't think this is kernel-level stuff cause it's in the Red hat [OK] bootup thing.
