checking whether a packge is installed


Hi,
I know this probably has a really simple answer,but how do you check to see whether you have a certain package/program installed on your system?

please remember that there a lot of different distributions, package management systems, window managers, web browsers etc... and while it's probable you're using RPMS in this case, it could be a lot of different systems. please try to classify what you are using where relevant, filling in the details on your profile would also be useful.
