changing resolution non-X / startup background

Hi,
how can you change the resolution of the shell when not running X? I'm a Linux newbie and I hardly work without X, but 640*480 (which I assume is the current resolution) is a bit silly on a large screen ;-)
Another question, I'm using Red Hat 9.0, but I saw a friend running SuSE 8.? and when that system is starting up, there's this neat background picture. Can you do that with Red Hat 9.0 as well?
Thanks,
Fungus.
