change password without shell access

Hi,

I'm setting up a FedoraCore5 server and I want to give my friends access to their own virtual web sites.

I've configured httpd okay, serving out of their home directories. I want to also give them FTP access so they can upload their content.

I've installed vsftpd and had it working okay with chroot jail to prevent them going outside their home dir. I've also set their shell to /sbin/nologin so they cannot ssh onto the box.

Is there an easy way to allow them to change their passwords (given that they cannot ssh to the box) or will I have to write a web application to do this??

Thanks.

Hi,

When you say 'change their passwords', do you mean if they forget the password, you want to provide a method of issuing a new one? Or just allow them to change it if they already know it?

Cheers,
Steve

Some ftp servers would support the "quote site pswd oldpassword newpassword" command to change passwords. Not sure if thats still around.

If I were you I'd set their login to /bin/false, set up password-less
ssh connections and have them scp their stuff across.

No worries about resetting passwords.

Thanks for all the replies. I've found www.ISPConfig.org and I'm going to have a look at that to see if it will help manage the different accounts.

The basic idea is to be able to offer many other people web sites so they can ftp their content into their home directories but not be able to log on or do anything else.

Obviously they may want to change their password from time to time. (yes, password reset is a different problem - but an important one too).

I haven't looked at ISPConfig yet, but it looks like it may help.

Thanks.
