Change mouse while Running X

I'm using a laptop with Gnome and RH8 and my problem is that if I start the computer w/o a mouse I get the laptop toutchpad (that's good) but when I later want to use my USB mouse (if I hook the computer up to a screen and external keyboard/mouse) I have to reboot the computer to make it find it.

How do I do this without having to restart the computer or X ?
Is it possible somehow ?

I don't believe that RH8's kernel supports "hotplugging," yet. Dunno 'bout RH9.

Cheers--

Have a look at the linux-hotplug page. Slackware 9.0 has hotplug support for usb, pci and pcmcia.

.I have hotplug installed on my box, it was installed with the distro apparently.

But the only file in /etc/hotplug/usb is usbcam
