Certain folders cause console to hang

Hey all,
I've been experiancing a strange problem lately and can't for the life of me figure out what's going on. I have 3 folders in my home directory "detective", "share", and "sound" that cause the terminal to freeze whenever I try to anything to them. I'll use the detective folder for example but it happens on all of them.

Code:
ls detec<tab>
*Frozen*
ls detective <enter>
*Frozen*
file/rm/mv/touch/etc. detective
*Frozen*
ls /home/baix/<tab>
*Frozen*
Pressing Ctrl-C breaks the hang but the command never executes. I also believe this problem is freezing up my "Save as..." menu in firefox/openoffice/etc. it pretty much freezes my system as it tries to open up my home directory. The only thing I can think of is that the detective and share were both used to mount samba drives...not sure about sound though.

Any help would be appreciated .

What's the output of:
Code:
stat detective
Are these directories on a local drive or on a network?

If they were remotely mounted and the remote side has frozen or disconnected, it might cause a problem. Does it freeze permanently or just for a long time?

I had a problem like this on a stuffed drive, slim chance thats you're problem. If your drive or filesystem is on it's way out then you should get at least a little warning in dmesg.
