centos4.5 - gcc issue?

Hi...

I'm running centOS 4.5 and I'm trying to recompile a new kernel but seems like gcc wont let me

root@yangtao [/usr/src/kernels/kernel-2.6.21.dn.p4]# make menuconfig
HOSTCC scripts/basic/fixdep
gcc: Internal error: Illegal instruction (program collect2)
Please submit a full bug report.
See <URL:http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla> for instructions.
make[1]: *** [scripts/basic/fixdep] Error 1
make: *** [scripts_basic] Error 2

I have done this before on the same server but it was centOS4.4 -- it got updated recently via YUM

any ideas would be appreciated
