cannt boot after kernel recompiling

At the beginning - sorry for my english skills...

I have such problem:
I have Fedora Core 4 with kernel 2.6.17.1 installed from rpms. I get kernel 2.6.20 from kernel.org and compiled it.
When i tried to made initrd, whit "mkinird..." i had message:
no modules for sata_via were found abording

but i added them to kernel, not as modules only inside.
I made one thing - i hashed line in /etc/modprobe.conf about sata_via and there were no this message and initrd were build.
Ofcorse i added lines to grub.conf...
But when i`m rebooting it stop on line:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20 ro root=LABEL=/1

and nothing it even don`t start to read initrd

under this line should be something like:
[Linux-bzImage, setup=..., size=...]
I made the same with kernel 2.6.18.6 and result was the same...
Thanks for every help...

sounds like a bad grub.conf, are you sure the kernel name is correct?

Have tried to use the bzImage kernel instead?

yes kernel name is ok...
sorry i don`t uderstand question:

"Have tried to use the bzImage kernel instead?"

i use it, i copied from ../arch/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20
But i have to say that i don`t know what mean:
root=LABEL=/1
i supose that root=/dev/hda ...

but why there is so silent?
i made probe and moved out initrd file and it was the same, so there must be some problem with kernel..
- maybe it isn`t decompiling?
i don`t know...
