I am trying to setup a computer for my mother with Mandrake 9.0. Everything is peachy except for I want to upgrade her XMMS and install Mplayer (as well as the plugin for Mozilla).
My problem is when I run ./configure for either of the programs, it stops with an error stating to the effect of "cannot find GTK+ 2.0 You must install before configure can continue." So, I went into RPMDrake and chacked, sure enough, GTK is in fact installed as well as it's devel packages from what I can see. I have tried installing everything I could find with "GTK" in the title or the details to no avail.
What measures shall I have to take to resolve this? I am almost finished with her computer and she is going nutty without it! (Litterally, she won't stop calling!)
i would certainly expect that the devel package is not there. try "rpm -qa | grep devel" and see if it says it is or not. it'll need to be the same version as your gtk.
Hmm... dunno much about rpmdrake, but most package management programs give you the option to view the files contained in the package... you can use that to find where gtk+ 2.0 is installed (it might be under a subdirectory of /lib or /usr/lib or even /usr/local/lib, for example).
Once you know where gtk+ 2.0 is installed, run (for whatever you're trying to compile) "./configure --help | less" (that will give you a full listing of options you can pass to configure, and piping it into less will mean you can scroll them with the space bar). Look for an option along the lines of --gtk-path=<directory> or something of the sort so you can tell it where you found it. Alternately, if you found it in a weird place, you can make a symlink to it from /usr/lib, so other programs can automatically find it in the future.
Thanks to the both of you! Well I'll be darned, I did "rpm -qa|grep devel" and sure enough, GTK is not in the list. I'm certain it's installed though, maybe it's in a funky place as oot suggested. I'll do a search for it and place it in the right place.
I'll check back with an update.

Well, it's official. I'm an IDIOT! The devel packages (both 1.2.1 and 2.0) of GTK were not installed even though I thought they were. Thank you for the help! Hopefully other people with read this thread and not discover the same idiocy.

I'm running Mandrake 10.0 (Official - 5 disks) and don't seem to have GTK devel packages installed. I am a newbie, so forgive the question, but how does one install them?
