cannot boot linux anymore

I added another partition to my multiboot setup with windows, blag, pclinuxos, alinux, and ubuntu. I have all the distros bootloaders installed to root partitions with GAG booting all from the mbr.

Naturally linux will not boot. No problem. Use my pclos cd and go into ubuntu to edit grub to reflect the new partition setup. Ubuntu has all the distros listed in its grub menu. I've changed the root partition in grub to/boot/dev/sda13. I have set hd0 (12) for root. I've also went into blag and pclos and changed configurations. Windows is booting fine.

I've reinstalled GAG with the new partition scheme but I cannot boot anything. I'm still getting a 'kernel panic - not syncing' message in two of the distros and ubuntu gives me just a grub prompt. I've tried to reinstall grub using the install cd in rescue mode but I get a stage 2 error with no install.

If I try to " boot vmlinuz ... " from the prompt I get a kernel not loaded message.

I suspected the hda numbering in grub to be the problem but I've been unable to accomplish anything changing numbering in case I've misjudged the partition positions.

Any ideas anyone?

Ya, anytime you add a partition, you'll need to change/edit your /etc/fstab ........

It seems like your boot scheme is overly complex. If you install grub or lilo directly to the mbr on your primary master drive, you should be able to boot pretty well any distro/os out there. Unless SATA or SCSI drives (whichever you're using) muck things up; I've never configured a linux machine with anything other than ide hdds.

What I did when I had multiple linuxes living on one machine was keep a common lilo.conf that I could use from a rescue CD. The important thing is just to keep things as simple as possible. Something complicated can break in complicated ways.

Aside from that make sure you have the fstab in each install pointing to the right partitions. You might do well to get a partition catalog from cfdisk, then use knoppix or something to mount each partition and make sure it is what you think it is.

I am getting some progress. I am able to boot three operating systems with lilo installed but grub is not cooperating. My partitioning scheme is complicated on one large sata drive. Thanks for the help. I knew nothing about fstab.

Update.

I ended up with the booting operating systems reporting partition and file system errors. Obviously, they were unhappy with the new scheme of things. I was forced to wipe the linux partitions and start anew. Not a biggy as I do have separate and safe partitions for data and backups.
