Which distro are you using? Almost all distros have prebuilt packages for gcc and its C++ cousin, g++. You shouldn't have to compile this from source.

Because the gcc packages are precompiled for you in rpm form by mandrake/mandriva. If the gcc packages are not on the install cds, you can set up a urpmi mirror where they can be obtained. It's much easier to install and uninstall software that way.

In mandrake run the following to see what you have currently installed in the gcc family:

$ rpm -qa | grep gcc

and post the output. From there I can tell you exactly what you need to install to get g++.

Open a console and run:

Code:
$ su
<enter root password>
# urpmi gcc
# urpmi gcc-c++
That should do it. You are missing both of the above packages. gcc is your basic compiler; you can't really compile anything from source without it. The gcc-c++ package installs g++, the C++ version of the gcc compiler. The "urpmi" command is the command line installation utility for mandrake/mandriva. It will install gcc and g++ for you along with any other packages needed by those packages(i.e. package dependencies). I'm pretty sure urpmi will also install libstdc++ along with g++ for example.

Sure. Here's a couple links to help you get started:

http://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=10600

http://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=10615

The first deals with how to setup and use urpmi in mandrake/mandriva. The second deals with how to install rpms and installing from source with tar.gz files. For a mandrake user, I would recommend that you carefully go over the urpmi article as it is a very nice tool and once you setup the urpmi repos, you will rarely have to install from source.
