Can't update packages. RH8

Trying to update RH8 packages. Using the package management selection a list of package that can be installed comes up. I choose the package to update and it tells me to insert Disk #1. I insert Disk #1 and click okay. Cd runs and it ask me to insert disk #1. again. I try every disk I have. I give up. (Was trying to install the RH logviewer.)

Now I try to just insert disk #1 and let it auto load. The Cd mounts and starts to auto load. Then I get the same question insert disk #1. I click okay. It asks again for disk#1. I try every disk I have none work. If I cancel, the file manager shows all of the icons. I can click on the readme file and read them okay. I can change folders etc. If I click on the a file named "auto load" or something like that, I get the insert disk #1 prompt again.

I have RH8 with all stock stuff. Have updated the kernel and various items from the RH network as they became available. I just updated the kernel a day or two ago to the latest. This is the 5 or 6 update all from RH network.

Something might be wrong with the CD...? Scratched, maybe.

Anyway, if you can mount the CD and read it, you should be able to copy the packages you want to load to the hard-drive, and load them from there.

If you put them in a directory called RPMs in your home directory, you can install them from a command-line with...

su -c 'rpm -ivh /home/username/RPMs/*.rpm'

Be sure to change "username" to your correct username.

THANKS!

I'll give that a try.

What is weird is that I loaded RH8 from these Cd's not too long ago. I only used them once and kept them in the original box. I thought maybe the new updated Kernel had something to do with it. Like it knew the rpm's were for a previous Kernel version.

RPMs aren't usually tied to a kernel version. Especially if it's just an updated kernel on the same distro version. The kernel is built so that it will run all the software they originally packaged.

We can end this thread.

This was completely my fault. Did not realized that the DVD drive was my main drive. That was the problem. Put disk in this drive, worked right away. I guess it was too late in the night.

THANKS AGAIN.
