Bootup Problem with Fedora Core 5
Hey guys,
I've just discovered this website, and I'm hoping you may be able to help me with something Linux-related - I'm racking my brains out here.
I've decided that it's about high time I learnt a bit more about Linux. At the moment, I'm rebuilding my server box as a Fedora Core 5 box and am having some serious 'issues' with it. I suspect they're partly related to the cruddy RAID controller I'm using, I just want to be 100% sure before I spend any more money on the box. After all, I've just spent over $1k on hardware for the thing, mainly hard drives....
Basically, this is what I've got so far...
It's an AMD XP-1500 box with 512Mb RAM. I've got a total of 6 hard drives in it - as follows:
- 13gb hard drive. This contains /boot, / and a 1gb swap file.
- 80gb hard drive. This contains /home.
(Both of these are on the onboard master IDE channel with a DVDRom on the 2ndary).
I also have 4x320gb hard drives on a PCI RAID controller. This gets mounted as /shared/raid. The idea is that both /home and /shared/raid get shared out to the network via Samba. At the moment, it's just the first 320gb that I'm trying to mount at the moment - there seems to be some strange behaviour happening where when the drives are in RAID, they test as bad sector central using the SeaGate tools, but once I break them and the drives are treated invidually, they all test fine individually. (NFI what's happening here but anyways...) When I installed FC5, I did all the partitioning through the install routine and it's set up everything on the RAID controller through devicmapper. This has booted fine previously without any probs whatsoever.
What's happening now though is when I try and boot up normally, it sits there at "Loading dm-snapshot.ko module" and just stalls. Nothing else. There is another option in Grub to boot up using different kernel options, and I do get something different here. I get messages when doing the bootup fsck "Failed to resolve /home" and "Failed to resolve /shared/raid". It then asks me to put in my root password to fix the problem. I can mount /dev/hdb1 to /home OK, but when I try to mount /dev/hde to /shared/raid, I get the message "/dev/hde already mounted or /shared/raid busy". If I mount /dev/hde1 to /shared/raid, I get an invalid block device.
I am at a complete loss as to what's going on here. The only thing that I can think of is that it is related to the way I shut the machine down - using the command 'init 0'.
I'm hoping that you can give an insight into what I can do here.
Cheers!
Tim.
