Please give some details on your system--e.g. the number and size of hard drives, how much RAM, etc.
Also, please post the exact error messages.
Things to try:
Re-boot (several times) and see if the behavior is consistent.
Boot from a live CD, and access your hard drive from there. Run commands like df and du to look for clues.
