Boot Trouble

All of a sudden my Red Hat Linux 9 refuses to boot.
When I start up, all seems to go OK, until the point where it allows Interactive startup, all the things there fail and it gives several errors that my partition is read-only. But I haven't changed anything on my Linux partition that could possibly result in this .

Then I am prompted to enter root password for maintenance. Once I do and I type mount, it does show that my Linux partition /dev/hdb1 is mounted on / with rw mode. So what can possibly be wrong here ?

One possibility is that you had a power failure or some other type of crash and your file system is corrupt. Try booting a rescue CD and then running fsck against every Linux partition except swap.
