bash: /etc/profile: Permission denied

bash: /etc/profile: Permission denied

I recieve the error above when logging in as user on my system.
I check /etc/profile and /etc/bashrc and both are -rw-r--r-- perms. on them.

What the user home direcotry looks like. Its also not subsituting the UID and GID with the correct names but leaveing the numerical values. As root everything works fine.

Code:
-bash-3.00$ ls -la
total 36
drwxr-xr-x 2 1002 100 4096 Mar 27 22:33 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 0 0 4096 Mar 27 22:31 ..
-rw------- 1 1002 100 41 Mar 27 22:33 .bash_history
-rw-rw-r-- 1 1002 100 178 Mar 27 22:39 .bash_logout
-rw-rw-r-- 1 1002 100 836 Mar 27 22:39 .bash_profile
-rw-rw-r-- 1 1002 100 449 Mar 27 22:39 .bashrc
The uid, and gui are correct for that user account.
I've tried removing and readding the user account and still get the above. Any ideas?

I have got one. You are talking about /etc/bashrc, but your listing shows /etc/.bashrc
That is possible that you have both bashrc and .bashrc and while you are looking at access of one file you are actually trying to access another one. If that is just a misprint then that is strange

The ~/.bashrc file calls /etc/bashrc ... ~/.bashrc is for custom user settings.. /etc/bashrc is global. Same with .bash_profile and /etc/profile .bash_profile just calls /etc/profile for global settings then reads .bash_profile for user settings...
Anyway, the problem seems to be a permission issue as root works but user doesnt. Not sure if my other problem with the GID, UID not having the numerical vales substituted out is part of it or not.
