Backup Server

Can I get some of your personal opionions on backing up files and servers? I have 2 RHL9 boxes. One is a "production" box and I want to use the second one as a "development/backup" box. What is the best way to do this? tar? Would it be best to back up the whole box, is fo how? or just the folders that I use/update regularly? Are there any links that you folks like that describe or outline this sort of function?

I am kinda new to this, so please let me know if more info would be helpful.

Thank you,
Mark

Okay... long time since i did (on Solaris that is)

but hopefully this can set you off in the correct direction

make sure you can rsh into your backup machine

lookup the dump (Solaris equiv is ufsdump) and restore(Solaris equiv is ufsrestore) commands.

you can do a dump from the first machine and pipe the results to the second

e.g. dump <command-line args> | rsh <backupmachine> restore <command line args>

you'll have to look up the command line arg of restore for accepting stdin

You'll need large enough parttitions for each file system on the backup machine

Hope I have not confused you to much

Good Luck... I'm farily new to Linux as well
