Backup related question

Hi everybody
I am new user to Linux and having my datatase server as oracle 11i.I want to take the backup of usr, bin, lib, var, opt, etc(except dev ) directory which are located under the root. Before I was using windows. Now I want to copy these folders for backup.I want to copy these folders into one partition having enough space.I have a doubt that will copy these folders will make any harm to the server or not.Because in windows when we copy the system files it shows that can't copy the files is in use. Will it give similar error in linux?Or I should proceed?
Please help me
hope for early reply

You will not have the same problem copying system files in the Linux environment. Just remember to keep the copies up to date. As you make changes to configurations in /etc, add/remove software (which could affect the contents of the directories you choose to copy), you must make new copies (or make differential backups) to keep them up to date.
