Application Compiling

1.
I really want to use linux Mandrake 8.x, but... I'm a n00b... I simply don't know what I have to do, to compile the applications in Linux. Can anybody help me here... detailed explanation is most welcome.

2.
Is there a thing like KDE / Gnome, which hides those stupid look address strings in the folder, or can they be disabled otherwise.

3.
I read allot about wine... I know that it is capeable of running many applications. But what about games ? Is it able ti run my games. such as Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. Diablo 2 ? Day of Defeat and Medal of Honor ? I know it's many.. and different too.. but can it run just a few of those ?
Is it worth it ? Is it slowing it to much down ?

1. ok to compile first open a terminal windows then change directory to the one where you downloaded the source. for example cd /usr/local

Next use ls to see the contents of the directory and type tar xvzf FILENAME.tar.gz (Make sure you get the name right or it will won't work)

now do ls again and you should see a new folder that will probably be called FILENAME do cd FILENAME to change to the new folder.

run these now one aftter the other
first ./configure
second make (this will show a bunch of gobbledy gook because it's compiling let it finish)
third make install

voila you're done good luck

2. Don't know what you want here I don't know much about changing the way KDE and gnome look

3. I don't think wine is worth it. It never has worked well for me but you can play many other neat games on linux like the quake III and RTCW demos. You'll need to install the drivers for your 3d card if you haven't already done so. Do a search on this forum for information on setting up games
