that dyndns looks very cool, but how long have you had it? is it one of those deals where you get set up for free, and then 6 months later they say sorry, everything that's worth a d@mn is now a "premium" service?

well, as i understand if you have a dynamic ip and want to run a server with an address like server.dyndns.org or something ,you sign up with a dns service and every time your ip changes you send your current ip to the dns. so server.dns.org=your_ip .
i like dyn.ee best

Nah, I've had it for a good year now, works great. No features have been taken away, in fact just the opposite. All free, definitely rocks!

Normally, to host your own, you'll ideally want a high speed connection. What this sometimes means though, is that you'll get DSL with a dynamic IP. These services offer the ability to have a domain with a dynamic IP. When you register a domain normally, you have to pony up an IP to have it sent to their name servers for resolution to your domain. Well if you've got a constantly changing IP (dynamic) then you will need to have a way to update this IP frequently. Not all registrars are ok with changing the IP frequently, so you can look at things like dyndns, or you can use zoneedit.com to resolve the name server for you. Alternatively you could also setup your own DNS and provide that to your registrar.

Anyway, it's all about resolving an IP to a domain name. These services offer a free way of doing that so you don't even have to register a domain, but you have to tack their service name onto the end of your domain. So for me:
masterc.no-ip.org
I'm using noip.com service.

HTH

Trinity22, I took a look at your site earlier, looks pretty nice. Very clean.

Cool

i used to pop email from www.yahoo.com but i dont recall doing any smtp. but yahoo = spam hell. they try to combat spam but the spammers are winning. my yahoo account now is just what i give out to register for stuff online (i.e. my spam account).

you could always run your own email server (which is what i do now). i dont allow pop but imap is nice and i set up webmail (horde with imp installled).
