Acrobat Reader install

I am trying to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader, but the install program gives me an error. It says:

./INSTALL: ed: command not found

What can I do to fix this?

install ed. it's on your distro cd's.

problems such as that are surely quiet self explanatory... it wants to use a program called 'ed' but it can't find it, so 1) see if it's installed, if not install it. 2) make sure it is on the path.

if you can't find out where this file comes from, always look on rpmfind.net to lookup what packaage provides it.

Thanks for the help, but there's no need to belittle me in the process.

I actually did do a search for ed using mandrake's software manager, but I must have missed it because there's a very large number of packages that have the two letters e and d next to each other in the names. When I didn't think that a package named "ed" existed, I asked here. I also was not aware of rpmfind.net at the time.

I got acroread installed, and even though I can't get the mozilla plugin to work I hesitate to ask for any more help. Anyways, thanks for the help again.

I'd like to thank JHuizingh for posting this question. I had the same problem, and I too didn't catch that "ed" was the name of a program.

I'd also like to comment that this site is my best linux resource - Don't give up on it too quickly!

(I see that this thread's been around for a while, but I feel strongly enough about this to reply anyway.)

hey guys i had the same problem with that ed thing at the end of it.

i installed everything instead on /home/directory and copied the nppdf.so to the mozilla plugins and it worked with the mozilla browser and did that path thing with the acroread.sh to usr/X11R6 /bin ........................but....
i did the same thing at the firefox plugins directory and nothin's happenin'

nppdf.so shows as a plugin for mozilla but it doesn't even print the document unless I save it or open it later with Konqueror or Kview

I even downloaded the latest reader to c if it'd worked and nothin'

any ideas i'd appreciate 'em

from mozdev.org:

"How do I install Acrobat Reader on Linux?

To install the Acrobat Reader plugin, copy nppdf.so to your Mozilla plugins directory, and make sure a copy of (or symlink to) acroread is in your PATH.

Note: If you do not know how to mess around with the PATH environment variable, there is a quick and easy fix. Simply create a symbolic link to acroread in a location that is in your path - /usr/X11R6/bin is a good place to put it. If you installed Acrobat Reader in /usr/local/Acrobat5, issue the following command at a terminal as root. Replace /usr/local/Acrobat5/ with your Acrobat Reader installation directory if you installed it somewhere else.

ln -s /usr/local/Acrobat5/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread /usr/X11R6/bin/acroread

Important! All users should upgrade to Acrobat Reader 5.0.9, as earlier versions of Acrobat Reader have security issues. "
