I am new to Linux, and I was wondering what you think of Linux, I am having an internal debate as to whether or not I should use Linux. If you could tell me some advantages of Linux I would be very greatful.
Where can you get a operating system for free!! And you can get support anywhere for example HERE! Micro$oft office for 900++ hell with it. I can get openoffice for free! I bet you want a more stable operating system then what you having now.
doublefailure, you can download Realplayer for Linux, and install it, that'll let you see some video on your browser. But trust me....if it's video formatted for only Windows Media Player, you just can't see it...just as Power Point Web Presentations cannot be seen in any Linux web browser...and if you can't live without that, then perhaps you ought to think about it...
Other than that...Linux will do everything and more than Windows can do.
1.) I had an old Pent. 166Mhz that was nothing more than a dust catcher.
2.) I wanted to learn a different OS (used Windows forever).
3.) I wanted to REALLY learn how an OS works (not just point & click and it works but you don't know how or why).
4.) I wanted to learn a little about programming.
5.) I heard alot of major business were using Linux servers because of stability & secureity.
6.) Linux is free and there are alot of forums & how-to's on the web to help me learn what to do.
Where does that leave me? I spent a few bucks in an old dead Windows machine, downloaded a small distro (Vector Linux), put it all together & now I have a Linux computer that shares an internet connection with a Windows 98 computer. Don't expect everything to go perfect it took me about 3 weeks to get my machine up and running stablly. Then there the learning curve of learning new commands & different apps. I still use Windows but Linux has help me learn alot about how an OS works & has even helped me to understand Windows a little better.
So give it a try it's not that hard to learn & there are alot of intelligent people online (at sites like this one) that freely give advice & try to help you solve whatever problems that your having. My outcome so far is this I revived a dead computer; got an OS, games & apps for free; learning alot about software & I,ve got a really stable OS.
zlinuxz thanks for comment
yup that's what i think....
learning curve + media player + game ( i was after every game of Blizzard,,w2,sc,dia.. they released w3 recently.. )
everything else linux wins..as far as i can tell
in fact, i have realplayer8 installed.. i can see some realaudio format video.
but the fifa page doesn't work.. can u give me a hint?
you can use Wine to emulate Dos, and run some applications...I think I heard that some people are actually running IE in linux...scary thought...might as well just run Windows, hehe.
But if you wanna play like Warcraft, or Starcraft (my favorite), then you should run them in Linux under Wine,
glad to hear you like SC as well, hehe...damn I used to play that 24/7, hehhe, so damn addicted to it. Watch for the dark templars, get some observes soon!!!!, , tight I'll do a reaver drop next and I'll web his tanks, muahaha. Don't forget to psi storm his tanks while webbed,
I am not too big on wine or anything done by codeweavers, but if you are interested there is a link to an app that will allow you to play .wmv and other Winbloze crap in Linux. Supposedly it also lets you view powerpoint presentations in your browser and works with Opera,Konqueror,Netscape,Mozilla,Galeon and others. If I were you I would rather email the author of that video and tell them they should think about making it into a format avail for all platforms. AVI's compressed with DivX are able to play on Linux, so there's one suggestion you could make.
thank you..
but i won't go that far for just playing videos..
but the fifa website gives u mediaplayer/realplayer option to choose,
i haven't been able to use realplayer on that site..
that's what i want to see =)
