If you are using a shell with tab completion just type the first letter of a command and then hit tab twice (ie. hitting a then <tab><tab> will give you a list of all the commands in your path that start with a).

It is part of kde so you need to be using a window manager that supports konqueror

there is something like it in gnome too.

Thumbs up Great Command Index

Thanks David Phillips,

The man:/ is a very good source for commands. I've also been looking for a good reference for commands.

Chijtska
Open The Konqueror Web Browser (if your using KDE) and type in the address bar "man:/" without the quotes and hit enter.

Now its time to some heavy

A lot of programs have the option to generate verbose output, meaning you get a more descriptive output.
some of them will accept more v 's for more detailed output

like -vvv

would be insanely verbose

It means that it will give you much more information than it would normally. It comes from the Latin 'verb...um?' meaning Word.

Verbose = wordy
Verbatim = exactly the same words
Verbal = of the word... ie verbal diahhroea means to talk to much
