Exclamation 486 dx-2 66 w 16mb ram [cheapo!] Rh 7.1! Is it possible?

486 DX2-66
486 DX-2 66 w 16MB RAM (text mode with telnet) GUI if possible?

Yes, I know I am cheap! But we just require machines w/ a robust OS and FREE (hence Linux) and offer only telnet sessions. We are replacing our dumb terminals with PCs unfortunately we do not have the budget that one would wish for. This is the best config I can salvage from the computer (office) depot.

I am using RH7.1 distribution. I use my home PC to install the HDDs- my config is a Celeron 850 with 256Mb ram. The harddisks are between 420MB and 540MB! Tight huh... therefore I ditched the GUI. It works fine on my machine but when I put the HDD back into the original machines it wont boot up! I have installed with it GUI Kde and text mode but both setup fails....

Loading linux .......
Uncompressing Linux.. Ok, booting the kernel. [halts]

Any advise?

If anyone out there with Pentium machines would like to get rid of please feel free to email me

andy.wong@custompress.com.au

Cheers!

Andy

Are you running the stock kernel, or did you compile your own? If you made a new kernel, perhaps you tagged it for optimizations for a processor above and beyond that 486. Try compiling a new kernel, I do just for fun.. I still use the scripts to do it though.. I know ppl who compile them manually. Man, that would take a long time.

Calm down...

I guess you need to make an install disk for RedHat.

on the disk is an image folder. The boot.img file can be put on a floppy by running the rawrite program in the utils folder.

You MUST open a command window first.

when asked were the disk is type a:
when asked where the file is type d:\images\boot.img

this assumes your cdrom is D:

if not change it to the proper letter

I guarantee you the program works I have made many boot disks.

When you installed RH via the Cely, RH found that it was on an i686 and promptly stuffed the i586 optimized kernel on there which takes a great big dump on your 486dx box. Mandrake won't even do the same thing, none of Mandy is compiled for less than an i586.

Find Slackware, preferably 7.1 as its default kernel, 2.2.16 was one of the more stable ever; nearly every distro had a release based off of it. Slack only installs with everything compiled i386 so you'll be fine. Heck, a FULL install of Slack 7.1 only takes up 980Mb, so you might even be able to slick X and KDE on there, but with 16 Megs of RAM I wouldn't try anything prettier than windowmaker.

Cheers,

clear as mud

installing Rh 7.1
i tried it on 486 dx266

We jsut require old pieces of crap to work as dumb terminals. Adn the company wished to save money as a few archiac wyse terminals have used up the tube live-or do not work anymore.

So someone had the bright idea of resurrecting old PCs and offer telnet nad web browsing capabilities for intranet.

Just had a few prbs installing rh7.1 but i seem to have it under contro after finding a few more reliable p75.

The 486 jsut couldnt handle installing 7.1 and i couldnt be bothered to go find previous versions or i486 backwards kernel.

Cheers... will update you of my progress... right now i am installing X win/gozilla/sound hehehehe shit i forgot to pop in the ISA Intel ethernetPro card (which i think there are no linux drivers) any ideas how to set it up in xterm or any gui available to me in Xwindows?

The intel card: modprobe eepro irq=x

Where x is any number that isn't used when you:

cat /proc/interrupts

I installed Xfree_svga and S3 package/drivers
Unfortunately for most branded PCs the video is onboard!

I have a Digital and 2 IBM desktops!

Both makes use onbard S3trio64 and I am guessing with 1MB video ram. Chipset detected but can find video ram size in Xconfigurator?

ANy ideas?

Thanks heaps...

You have probably moved on by now, but do a search here for Trio64 and you might find something usefull. I have gotten 640x480 4bit and 1024x768 8bit to work. Im going to keep trying till I get 800x600 16bit. I can send you my config files for The IBM machine that sounds exactly the same as what you mentioned ! Maybe that will help.

Cheers !!
