1024x768 resolution isn't available, and should be
In my new distro, MEPIS 8, there's no higher resolution than 800x600 available. I think the liveCD installation didn't figure out the optimum resolution, because before this (on MEPIS 7), I was using 1024x768, and my monitor can go as high as 1680x1050. What should I change?
I don't use MEPIS, but the symptom you describe is typical of a X-server defaulting to using the vesa (VGA) device driver because no driver for your video driver could be found.
The solution is to identify your video driver hardware and install a driver for that hardware. (Typically only FOSS drivers are shipped with Linux distributions to avoid copyright infringement problems with propitiatory device drivers.)
I ran the MEPIS liveCD with VESA, because MEPIS 7 and 8, and possibly other distros, had some sort of problem with my chipset when I ran them with the default video setting. X wouldn't run. I'll try to find a driver, but this is peculiar, because although I did have to run the MEPIS 7 and 8 liveCDs in VESA, MEPIS 7 didn't have this problem.
