[Kernel] Question about 'make install'

Hey,

Does make install automatically substitute the old /boot/sometypicalkernelimage with the new one?

I just want to make sure.

No. You need to copy it manually to the /boot directory.

For example, on my Gentoo box,

I run

Code:
root@computer#cd /usr/src/linux
root@computer#make menuconfig
root@computer#make && modules_install
root@computer#cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz

Hm.. you do make and make modules_install. After I finish configuring my kernel via make menuconfig it tells me (quoting) Next, you may run "make bzImage", "make bzdisk", or "make install". Honestly, I'm lost, I've read many howtos and each of presented a different way than the other..

Could you, or someone else clear things up a bit for me?

http://www.slackersbible.org/node/42 also does it with make, and make modules_install.. is that the way to do it only with a 2.6.* kernel? Cause I'm running 2.4.29, the stock kernel, at the moment (I'm not saying I won't switch to 2.6.* later).

Yeah. There is a slight difference between the two.
Cuz mine is Gentoo, yours is Slackware. I am using the Gentoo Specific Kernel, (but not genkernel)

But your setup is not "much" different.

I don't get your question exactly. The essential tip would be..whenever you make changes to your kernel (recompile it), you always re-copy your bzImage. Failing to do so, will simply boot the old kernel without the modification.

So you won't be surprised to find out "no improvement".
