then tell me why people should use word if u can do the same thing with openoffice? (opening word documents)
if u type ls in dos so much , yes it happens to me all the time as well , make a simple .bat file named ls. and put it in the c:\windows dir?
what I'm trying to tell here is that why are people trying to run linux applications on an unstable system like windows?
don't take me wrong here but what is the difference between the media player in linux and a media player in windows??
I also regret I have to run windows @ work, but that is not a reason to install linux applications on it. why should I . I choose linux for the commandline and the stability. not a special software issue.
I tried cygwin ones. and yes its cool that it works in windows, but where is the power of the commandline??

I can't understand your ignorant statments. Just because you don't see a reason for it doesn't mean someone else doesn't.
My biggest reason for having it is because I've taken some linux/unix classes at school and I like to test out the new material in class on my laptop, but I don't have enough harddrive space to install a dual boot system.
Side Comments:
By the way open office does not format all word documents correctly. There is a big difference between mplayer and windows media player.

because openoffice is shit IMHO slow, restrictive and annoying..., while Word is by FAR the best wordprocessor. I'd like to pretend it's not, but i gotta admit it really.
ok. mods are right about keaping things calm. I'm ok with that.
but I want to keep this discussion open.
I told my opionion about the use of linux/unix apps on a windows box. maybe it sounded cruel. but hey this is how I am.
I have a comment on the fact that word is the best wordprocessor.
it's not that I hate MS, (yes I really do ) but I had more problems with word IMHO then with openoffice or staroffice.
@ work I had 4 hours work because of the fact that word crashes on some documents. some bug in winword.exe.
each time I open it. word crashes.
only sollution. opening it in staroffice. converting it to ascii , use Write, wordpad or whatever and cleaning the shit up. then back to word and restoring the document.
OpenOffice might be slow sometimes , but it never crashes on particular documents.
when I started to screw around with linux a few years ago because I was interested I didnt had the possibilty to dual boot either. I took the go or no go , and fdisked my entire system.
I was too dumb enough to understand that I wasnt ready for the system I was installing: slackware. I switched to mandrake to learn more about the system. I did everything I needed on mandrake, office applications, oracle databases, music, etc.
I hear people complaining about that software issue. I still can't figure out why u choose a certain OS just because of that. in my opionion there are always alternatives on both sides. I still can't figure an app that doesnt work on linux or the other way around.
@ the moment I might be proud to say I don't need windows anymore. so I won't port windows on my linux box. when I'm @ work I have to use windows. if I would need linux things on a windows box. why not using VNC to another machine? or ssh?
there are much better sollutions to it
PS.
I never tried VI as the windows binary. I only use it on my linux box. and yes it owns compared to notepad
